The Future of AI: Unlimited Possibilities to Shape Our Future
Jorge Liang Sanchez – Stemfinite.com
Introduction to AI
In 1950, Alan Turing pioneered the field of computing by publishing ‘Computer Machinery and Intelligence,’ a book covering the concept of AI. However, it was not until 1980 that AI was popularized among experts who started experimenting with programs entirely created by such technologies [1]. Today, AI has become a predominant use in most people’s day-to-day lives. From generating images and deepfakes to writing full texts, artificial intelligence has gained the ability to do many life-changing things. As a matter of fact, the image above is completely AI generated. These impressive functionalities are not showing any sign of slowing down, as the rapid development of technologies is leading to significant improvements in the field.
Perspectives on AI
This rapid boom in AI technology has led to many controversies regarding topics like academic honesty, privacy, and more. The late Stephen Hawking argued that AI would develop much faster than humans and eventually take over. He believed that due to this, robots would design themselves and possibly ignore humans, meaning that we would have to be extremely careful in the development process. Many education experts also believe that AI will affect children’s creativity as plagiarism will be much easier, leading to a less innovative society. Access to these AI tools in schools has been blocked in many areas like Seattle, Washington, as a growing disapproval of such technologies occurs [2].
On the other hand, AI can be beneficial to humans if a harmonious relationship is achieved. This would mean that while humans specialize in their ability to be creative and solve complex problems, AI would concentrate on effectiveness in data-related tasks. Such outcomes could significantly impact the speed of technological development in various fields like medicine, where a cure for cancer is still unknown. An example of this scenario is that while scientists design and conduct experiments, AI analyzes large amounts of data and predicts a future trend.
The Future of AI
There are countless theories regarding the future of Artificial Intelligence that can be debated for hours. It is crucial to analyze current data to predict the future of AI and its possible impact. Chat GPT reached approximately 100 million active monthly users roughly two months after its launch [4]. This is much faster than widely known apps like TikTok and Instagram took to reach that milestone. Because the use of AI has rapidly grown ever since its creation, it is likely that in the near future, AI will have an even more significant influence on all aspects of our lives, including work, transportation, and leisure.
GPT-4, which was released less than three years after GPT-3, was created with almost 600 times (1.76 trillion) more parameters than those of GPT-3 (175 billion). These impressive performance changes increase efficiency in jobs like cybersecurity, where lots of data are constantly analyzed, leading to a better defense against threats. As mentioned before, it would greatly impact the medical field during surgeries where the chance of mistakes would be reduced if a robot was in control. Not only would it help in these robotic operations but also in the exploration of cures where large amounts of samples and data are needed. According to this data, a very probable outcome is that AI in the future will be much more powerful than it is today and will be able to perform tasks that were once unimaginable.
According to a study by the Pew Research Center, only 18% of adults in the United States have used AI like Chat GPT. Conversely, 67% of teens were familiar with AI. From this data, we can conclude that these technologies are much more prevalent among younger people [3]. However, this may be different in future years. AI is a relatively new technology, and most of the older generations today have yet to access it, meaning they are not familiar with it. In the future though, kids will likely grow alongside AI as people of all ages will use it.
In conclusion, although there are many opinions about artificial intelligence, there is one thing that everyone can agree on. AI can be a life-changing tool for future generations if used correctly. If the opposite happens, it can be the downfall of humanity. This is why everything depends on how AI evolves from now on.
